An Artist's Advice for Avoiding Internet Scams
Christine Marie Davis, www.tactileart.com

As an artist I have received a lot of scam offers to purchase my artwork in the 10 years I have been selling work online and I want to pass on some tips so you don't have to live in fear or be duped. If you learn to spot these messages quickly you won't waste your time.

Some things to look for in the inquiry are:
• English that is bad with misspellings, bad grammar and somewhat of a "British" politeness.
• Offers that involve a large amount of money--purchasing your most expensive pieces or lots of things.
• Foreign addresses and emails.
• The offer comes out of the blue, with no prior communication.
• Author of the inquiry claims to be a representative of another party (for example: "My client..." "My company...").
• There is ALWAYS some kind of reference to sending you money (usually by cashier's check) in the first email and they often ask you to give them your mailing address.

You can be 95% sure these types of inquiries are bogus. I usually hit the delete key right away. If I do want to pursue communications with the inquirer, I follow these rules:

• NEVER give them a physical mailing address or bank account information.
• NEVER accept a cashier's check, and it is probably best not to arrange a wire transfer either (as you have to give them your bank account info).
• Never accept more than the amount of the transaction (as they will want a refund later - red flag).
• ALWAYS demand full disclosure of all of the inquirer's information (mailing address, phone number, credit card info) if they avoid telling you these when you ask, this is another red flag.

*Please note that the suggestions given above are based on the author's personal experience and should not be taken as legal advice.*
