Embracing the Desert Light - Palm Desert, CA
The City of Palm Desert's Art in Public Places Commission would like to develop a pool of artists for a project titled: Embracing the Desert Light and other potential projects that utilize light as the primary medium. Qualified artists should have experience in creating artworks that incorporate natural light during daylight hours and subdued artificial or reflected light at night. Artists that have previously worked with solar, LEDs, lasers, light reflective materials, materials that trans mit light, any other materials that can utilize light, or any combination of them are highly desirable. Due to the harsh desert environment, qualified artists should have experience in working with materials that can withstand the climatic conditions. The Commission is particularly interested in vertical artworks that utilize some or all above components in pieces that can be sequential or multiple with a common design(s) and a small footprint of three to four feet for each piece. The entire array of the pieces can esthetically function as one piece over a course of a one half (1/2) mile. Interested artists should send materials to Richard L. Twedt, Public Arts Manager, City of Palm Desert, 72567 Highway 111, Palm Desert, CA 92260. Email: rtwedt@ci.palm-desert.ca.us, call 760.837.1665 for any additional information. Deadline for submissions: Friday, October 10, 2008. Emailed resumes and jpegs are acceptable, as are slides and CDs. If emailing jpegs, make sure images are 72dpi. All images and projects should be identified by dimensions, materials and place of temporary or permanent installation, if appropriate.

Permanent Outdoor Site-Specific Installation - Redding, CA
In the mid-1970s, a roof was constructed over Redding's downtown core to create an indoor, climate-controlled, pedestrian mall. Soon, thereafter, a major suburban mall was constructed on the other side of town. This "modern" mall drew business away from downtown leaving many vacant retail spaces and an under-utilized commercial district. The Redding Redevelopment Agency is currently deconstructing the roof structure over three blocks of former street right-of-way to create an open-air pedestrian plaza in Redding's core. Concrete columnar supports from the demolished roof will remain as architectural remnants and opportune staging for future installations and/or public art. The remainder of the mall roof is scheduled to be removed in 2008. The goal of this installation is to provide an aesthetically pleasing, interactive, and engaging public destination. Shade for pedestrians and lighting are two important functional needs. The theme of the artwork has not been preselected and work in a variety of durable media and forms will be considered. Deadline: August 15, 2008. For more information, go to: www.reddingart.org/calltoartists.html

The available amount for each site ranges from $1,000 to $15,000. Artists need to include all applicable expenses: materials, insurance, framing, labor, taxes, installation, project plaque, and photographic documentation in the cost of the artwork. This project is open to artists in all stages of their careers that live in New Mexico or are represented by a gallery that is located in New Mexico. Galleries located in New Mexico may submit for artists that they represent regardless of artists state of residence. Submissions for artists living out-of-state must be sent in by the gallery. Gulf-South Regional Contemporary Art Exhibition
BECA gallery presents the 2nd Annual Gulf South Regional Contemporary Art Exhibition from January 3-February 28, 2009. This competition for group exhibition is open to all visual artists, without representation in New Orleans, residing in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida and working in 2-D and 3-D mediums. This Call is being issued well in advance of our November deadlines because we want to give maximum time for artists to adequately prepare. Due to the rare nature of this opportunity to exhibit works during a contemporary art biennial, we expect the competition to be strong. Our gallery location is directly across the street from the primary Prospect 1 biennial venue. Plan to put forth your best work and please make sure that you are presenting high quality images of your work for consideration. The purpose of the annual Gulf South Regional Contemporary Art Exhibition is to discover and highlight new emerging Gulf South contemporary artists, their current work and the ideas that are motivating their creative processes. The exhibition is juried by the gallery's Co-Directors who are seeking the most engaging and innovative works to feature during this group exhibition. Physical CD submissions will be accepted through November 14, 2008. Complete information and submission guidelines may be downloaded from becagallery.typepad.com/my_weblog/call-to-artists.html.
