A retreat gives us the opportunity to step outside the day-to-day and look at the big picture of our creative dreams. It gives us freedom from obligation and responsibilities and guidance from a facilitator and/or our artist peers.

Dia de los Muertos: A Day of the Dead Celebration

Camera Obscura
The Drawing Studio Gallery, a nonprofit artist collective, is seeking submissions of images made using pinhole cameras or camera obscura techniques for a juried Camera Obscura exhibit in February, 2007. Artists currently residing and working in Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, California, and Nevada are eligible. Artists may submit up to 5 images for consideration either as jpeg images on a cd (readable by either a Mac or PC), or color slides. Applications must include: work samples, work sample description list (include title, size, photographic medium, and type of camera used to create image), artist statement (no more than 250 words) and accurate contact information, self-addressed stamped envelope for return of work samples. Selected work must be suitably ready to hang and no larger than 60" high x 36" wide. Artist is responsible for all inbound and outbound shipping expenses, including insurance while in transit; all expensed must be prepaid, no CODs accepted. Artwork that differs significantly from entry submission may be disqualified. Deadline for submissions is October 30, 2006. Artists will be notified by November 30. Work must be received at The Drawing Studio Gallery by January 22, 2007. No fee for submissions. Gallery will retain a 40% commission. The Nature Conservancy's Andy Warhol Preserve Visual Arts Program
The Andy Warhol Visual Arts Committee, comprised of artists, educators and The Nature Conservancy staff, accepts applications from artists who are interested in the artist-in-residence program. Artists in residence are provided with basic housing for one week, during which time they have access to the Andy Warhol Preserve for artistic pursuits. The artist in residence agrees to conduct one educational workshop during his or her stay, but is free to pursue his/her own artistic endeavors during the rest of the week. Artists interested in conducting programs and/or participating as an artist in residence at the Andy Warhol Preserve should send a cover letter and resume. Visitors to the preserve are asked to leave it in the condition it was found. The preserve is located in a remote area and a car suitable for a rough road is essential. The 2006 William H. Johnson Prize
The William H. Johnson Foundation for the Arts is a nonprofit, tax exempt organization which seeks to encourage African American artists early in their careers by offering financial grants. The William H. Johnson Foundation for the Arts awards grants to those individuals who work in the following media: painting, photography, sculpture, printmaking, installation and new genre, and who demonstrate a financial need. Snake River Canyon Rim Trail - Twin Falls, ID
The Magic Valley Arts Council in Twin Falls, Idaho, seeks an artist to develop two sculptures at key points along the Snake River Canyon Rim Trail to serve as the first two pieces in a visionary sculpture walkway. The two installation points are located where city inhabitants, employees and visitors congregate, pass through, or use on a daily basis. Deadline: October 13, 2006. Open to professional artists residing in the USA. Artists from all cultural, ethnic, and economic backgrounds are encouraged to apply. Ideally, the pieces will be reflective of the topography, landscape, geology, heritage, and recreational pursuits characteristic of the area. The goal of the public art project is to provide a lasting legacy in Twin Falls to add dimension, depth and character to the community, inspire young minds, encourage and aid in business retention, reinforce a local identity for citizens to take pride in, and generally add to the beauty and quality of life enjoyed by all. Potential directions for the theme include, but are not limited to: the geology and history of the Snake River and canyon, including outdoor recreational activities: Native American themes: living in the high desert; and wildlife and aquaculture. The Nude International 2007
The Nude International is an annual, juried exhibit in its 21st year, hosted by the Lexington Art League, of Lexington, KY. Exhibit dates are January 14 March 5, 2007. Animas River Trail Mural Project - Durango, CO
The City of Durango, Colorado invites interested artists to submit artwork proposals for the Animas River Trail Mural Project. This project is intended to create an attractive and meaningful mural centrally located in Durango. The original artwork selected will be placed on the exterior cement wall of the Signature Salon and Health Spa, located at 1521 Main Avenue. The piece will be placed directly adjacent to the Animas River Trail and Greenway near the Main Avenue Underpass, which was completed in 2005. The City wishes to recognize the contribution of the Signature Salon and Health Spa in allowing the use of this wall space. The project is open to all artists who have demonstrated an understanding of working with municipalities on previous public artworks. Due to the site constraints, this project is ideally suited to artists focusing primarily in two- or three-dimensional media. The budget for design, execution, transportation and installation is $25,000. A stipend of $500.00 will be awarded to each finalist to assist with expenses related to the finalists' presentations. Three finalists for the project will be determined by an 11-member selection panel based on a review of qualifications and proposals as submitted. The application deadline is October 27, 2006. Residency Season at the Artists' Enclave at I-Park
I-Park announces its seventh season hosting The Artists' Enclave. Artists' residencies, self-directed/project oriented, will be offered from May through October, 2007. Most sessions are four weeks in duration, with a six-week session planned for October-November. Residencies will be offered to visual (including digital) artists, music composers, environmental artists, landscape and garden designers and architects. Work samples will be evaluated through a competitive, juried process. Application Deadline: October 31, 2006. There is a $20 application processing fee required and artists are responsible for their own transportation to the area. They also provide for their own food and work materials. The facility is otherwise offered at no cost to accepted artists. I-Park is a 450-acre natural woodland retreat in rural East Haddam, Connecticut. Accommodations include comfortable private living quarters in an 1850s farmhouse, shared bathroom facilities and a private studio on the grounds. Pecos-Llano Regional Invitational Art Exhibition
The Carlsbad Museum and Art Center seeks submissions for the first Pecos-Llano Regional Invitational Art Exhibition. The exhibition will be on view from mid-November, 2006 through mid-February, 2007, and will be accompanied by a publication which will be distributed nationally. Participation is open to artists aged 18 and over living in the trans-Pecos and Llano Estacado regions of southeastern New Mexico and west Texas - between I-40 to the north and I-10 to the south, from the Texas caprock west to the central New Mexico mountains. Artists may submit up to 5 works created in the past 3 years for consideration. The exhibition is open to all styles, mediums and subject matter. All works must be original in concept and execution. No work will be selected that has been made from commercial patterns, templates or molds. Works may be 2-D or 3-D, and may be traditional or contemporary fine art or crafts. Works will be selected by exhibition curator Terry Bumpass, former director/curator of the Governor's Gallery, Santa Fe. Selections are subject to the discretion of the director and the Fine Arts Committee of the Carlsbad Museum and Art Center. Works must be no larger than 48 inches in any dimension. All 2-D work must be framed and ready for hanging. 3-D or sculptural submissions must not weigh more than 50 pounds and must be easily handled by two individuals. Works must be ready for installation and display in a low-security gallery environment. There is no entry fee. No prizes will be offered, and works will not be offered for sale from the exhibition. The Carlsbad Museum and Art Center will be responsible for all installation and insurance costs. Artists in the Carlsbad area will be asked to deliver work to/pick work up from the Museum. Artists outside the area will be asked to deliver work to/pick work up from collection points (to be arranged) in their areas.
