Constructing New Berlin
Exhibition continues through September 24, 2006. Since the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, Berlin has increasingly been recognized as a global nexus for contemporary art. Artists of various nationalities have flocked to the new capital of re-unified Germany, lured by generous grant programs, abundant and inexpensive studio spaces, and an expansive gallery scene. This exhibition, organized by Phoenix Art Museum, is the first major survey of contemporary art made in post-Wall Berlin, including approximately 18 Berlin-based artists of various nationalities working in painting, sculpture, photography, film, installation, video-installation, sound, and performance art. The majority of works in the exhibition are from the 21st century, including a number of new pieces made specifically for this project. Phoenix Art Museum, 1625 N. Central Avenue, Phoenix, AZ 85004. For more information go to: www.phxart.org

La Tumba de la Reina Roja
Exhibition continues through September 24, 2006. Ricardo Mazal: La Tumba de la Reina Roja, from Reality to Abstraction includes photographs, monotype studies, finished paintings and a video documenting Mazal's processes. In these works, he explores the three "zones" of experience with pre-Columbian culture and spirituality: the jungle, the stones and the tomb. As he immersed himself in the mystical past of the Red Queen, Mazal was reconnected with his Mexican heritage and embarked upon a narrative of personal discovery that allowed him to explore universal, age old questions of power, fame and mortality. Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, 7374 East Second Street, Scottsdale, AZ 85251. For more information go to: www.smoca.org

Shelter
Exhibition continues through October 1, 2006. Shelter: Selections from the Permanent Collection. Shelter is a term often associated with the structures that provide protection from the elements. The most iconic form that embodies this concept is the house, and more often than not this object is depicted as a pitched roof structure typical of homes in the East and Midwest. The variety of architectural styles of houses and buildings in the Southwest expand on this theme to include the abundant flat roofed adobe and Mission-style structures that define the region, conjuring a similar feeling of protection by those familiar with them.
