How do you go about making yourself noticed among the thousands that are swimming in the great big sea that is the art world? Some readily say that artwork speaks for itself. The highbrow content of the work, the magnificent quality of the style, etc., are the opening things mentioned. No. Truth is; in the economy we're facing, there's no such thing as a ride based on talent alone.
Smart marketing is becoming more of an integral part of an artist's career. For those with the money to purchase time from busy professional firms, great, but for the rest that struggle everyday; creative spinning is needed.

Science and Engineering Visualization Challenge
The National Science Foundation (NSF) and the journal Science invite you to participate in the fourth annual Science and Engineering Visualization Challenge. The international competition recognizes scientists, engineers, visualization specialists, and artists for producing or commissioning innovative work in visual communication. The ability to convey the essence and excitement of research in digitized images, color diagrams, multimedia and animation has given researchers the perspective needed to set new research directions and equipped other citizens to see and understand complex science concepts. Award categories: Photographs, Illustrations, Interactive Media, Non-Interactive Media and Informational Graphics. Winners in each category will be published in the September 22, 2006 issue of Science Magazine and Science Online and displayed on the NSF website. Seeing God
A nationally juried show sponsored by The Dadian Gallery of the Henry Luce III Center for the Arts and Religion and the Washington Printmakers Gallery. Deadline: May 15, 2006. Exhibition Dates: October 23-December 15, 2006. Venue: The Dadian Gallery of the Henry Luce III Center for the Arts and Religion at Wesley Theological Seminary, Washington DC, 20016. Printmakers are invited to consider what it means to them to see God, whether in their studios, in the natural world, on the street, or in any other place. National Photography Competition
The Camera Club of New York announces its 2006 National Photography Competition. The competition is open to all US residents 18 years or older except members of the Camera Club of New York or their families, and employees. Freestanding pieces will not be accepted. Antonin Kratochvil, renowned photographer and documentarian, will be the Juror. Each entry will consist of either 6 digital entries on CD or 6 slides with a fee of $35.00. Insights 2006
Lighthouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired has issued a call for artists for Insights 2006, a national juried art exhibition of works by artists who are blind or visually impaired. Showing September 11-November 22, 2006 in the San Francisco Art Commission Gallery in City Hall. Submit up to 5 entries on 35mm slides if possible; 8x10 photographs or electronic files on CD-ROM that accurately represent the creative work will also be accepted. Distinguished jurors will select work from all two and three-dimensional media except video. Touchable art encouraged. Works will be selected on the basis of original concept, expressive use of media, and artistic excellence. Three outstanding artists will be awarded a cash honorarium. Estampas de Vida
Hispanic AIDS Forum, the largest Latino/a AIDS service organization in NYC, announces an open call for its Estampas de Vida, a juried contest featuring works of Latino/a visual artists, celebrating community, health, self-respect and self-esteem. Estampas de Vida is a project that foments healthy communities and healthy individuals through the use of art. The winning art will be used to create a series of 10 "estampas" or cards that will be used to promote AIDS/health awareness within the Latino community. Children's Fairyland
Bay Area Interdisciplinary teams of artists are invited to apply for the unusual and innovative public art opportunity to create an original, multisensory, interactive public artwork project for Children's Fairyland, the City of Oakland's historic and beloved amusement park. The selected team will work with an existing structure in the park and create a new attraction through the creative re-visioning and renovation of the space. Children's Fairyland, visited by over 130,000 guests each year, is located at the north end of Oakland's central crown jewel, Lake Merritt. Budget: $70,000. Old Chain of Rocks Bridge St. Louis, MO
Trailnet, Inc. in St. Louis is hosting a design competition to commission an artist(s) to create a series of at least 20 colorful, large-scale banners that will be a noteworthy visual enhancement to the architecturally significant Old Chain of Rocks Bridge. The budget for the project is $20,000 including design and fabrication. The bridge is a former Historic Route 66 river crossing and now the site for many of Trailnet's community programs, most notably Eagle Days in January. This renovated bridge is dedicated exclusively to bicycle and pedestrian use. At one mile, it is one of the longest of such bridges in the world. Deadline: May 15, 2006.
