Figuratively Speaking

Frank Bruno, www.artistfrankbruno.com

A strong artist demeanor is important to achieve. Using artistic terminology is vital to sounding professional as long as it doesn't sound like you swallowed a dictionary of artistic terms. Many art books do contain a good glossary. A great website for such a word reference is Artlex.com, a free site dedicated to words of art and artistic movements. Being an artist working predominantly with the human form, one of my early dilemmas was trying to "figure" out what galleries actually exhibited figure works of art. Although acceptable, seldom is the word "figural" actually used. If a gallery states they show "figurative" work, it left me to wonder. A "figurative" work of art actually means a subject or object that is recognizable. Abstract art is the opposite. The term "figuration" means forming a design from the combination of figures. It amazed me that many galleries actually considered "figurative" and "figuration" to mean work done in the human form. This is just one of the reasons why Renee and countless others urge us to visit galleries and not just act on what we read.

Artist Opportunities

This is just a sample of the many opportunities available on ArtistsRegister.com!

Historic Building Photography Project
The camera was once called a mirror with a memory. Even in the digital age, it offers the means to freeze moments and sights as history. The Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture's Public Art Program is seeking a photographer to do just that by creating a portfolio of historic Phoenix buildings. As Phoenix continues to develop and expand, this portfolio of images will become a valuable resource for residents, planners and scholars interested in seeing the finest examples of the City's historic structures. A selection of the images would be framed and become part of the City's portable works collection. In addition to being exhibited in city buildings as part of the permanent collection, the photographs will be used by the Office of Historic Preservation to create awareness of their programs through their website and educational publications. The completed portfolio should demonstrate the photographer's unique vision and document some of the city's more notable historic buildings. The number of buildings included in this important survey will be derived from the city's inventory of historic structures and determined through discussions with the artist, the Phoenix Office of Historic Preservation and the Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture. Photographers working with analog and/or digital methods are encouraged to apply. Materials used to produce final portfolio images must be archival to ensure long-term storage and exhibition potential. The final portfolio must be either 16" x 20" or 20" x 24" for exhibition. The selected photographer will be asked to submit a digital copy of the portfolio in addition to a hard copy, for future publication purposes. The project is open to any professional artist residing in Arizona. City of Phoenix employees, selection panelists and panelists' immediate family members, are excluded from participation on this project. Deadline: Thursday, April 13, 2006. Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture, Public Art Program, ATTN: Historic Buildings Photography Project, 200 W. Washington St., 10th Floor, Phoenix, AZ 85003. For more information or a copy of this publication in an alternate format, contact Rebecca Rothman at phone: 602.495.0893, City of Phoenix TTY Relay: 602.534.5500, or e-mail: rebecca.rothman@phoenix.gov.
