Artist Defection: A theory on why artists leave the field

Jezli Pacheco, www.geocities.com/jezli

From the mouths of survey people, and other industry professionals, we are told artists on average last up to 5 years before laying down the brush, chisel or whatever tool they use. The dissolution of their dreams is directly related to the impossible odds of cresting the wave of recognition. Artists are more likely to face mediocre art careers regardless of their masterful techniques and finished products. Why? Simple, unlike other careers that are considered socially necessary; art is viewed as a sideshow of everyday life. This is simply lack of education first on the general public's part and second artists.

Shrugging aside fears of inadequacy, many artists, myself included; sorely lack the business acumen to market their art successfully. Bringing into their careers just creative skills leaves them floundering once out of art school. From personal experience art school was just a preliminary of what the art world is like. The ordinary art teacher is your future artist competitor. Sometimes you will find that they will be a great hindrance to you and others they will remain in your artistic life for years to come. Mentors and competitors alike they are not the only people that should be part of the artists schooling. Mandatory classes, seminars, and workshops on marketing and business should be the norm not the exception.

Selected works will be on loan from artists and displayed at the Civic Center and Downtown Center in Prescott Valley, Arizona from May 2006 through April 2007. Works may be available for sale. Terrazzo Public Art Projects
The Public Art Program of the Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture invites Arizona painters, printmakers, quilters and creators of other two-dimensional art to expand their vision into terrazzo floors. No experience with terrazzo is necessary. The desire and ability to produce new expressions for a medium with an enduring heritage is a must. Winning artists will be given the opportunity to create designs for terrazzo floors at five new and refurbished city buildings, slated for construction in the coming year. The word means "terraces" in Italian. This centuries-old method uses bits and pieces of stone, marble dust and shells to create beautiful and durable floors. Early terrazzo consisted of shell fragments and stone conglomerate mixed with cement, which was then ground flat to create a smooth walking surface. Modern terrazzo has cement or an epoxy base, and is often used for the floors and lobbies of stores, offices, and other large, heavily-trafficked buildings. Deadline: March 16, 2006. For additional information, or a copy of this information in an alternate format, contact Donna Isaac, Public Art Project Manager, at 602.534.5084, through City of Phoenix TTY Relay at 602.534.5500, or e-mail donna.isaac@phoenix.gov. www.phoenix.gov/arts/calltoa.html#terrazzo
