The Artist/Dealer Relationship
26 Questions to Ask The Gallery

Renee Phillips, Manhattan Arts International

How often have you heard such words as: "We don't need a written contract. In all the years I've been in business I've never used a contract with my artists. You can trust me." Did you refuse to challenge the person who said this? Do you have any regrets for not speaking up and taking action to protect yourself? Even if the gallery has a contract keep in mind it has been prepared by their attorney with their interests in mind, not yours.

Perhaps you are just beginning a relationship with a gallery. Do you have any unresolved questions or doubts? Have you agreed on the gallery commission and the time you will be paid after the sale? Does your written agreement include a provision for termination in the event of the owner's or director's death or the gallery's bankruptcy or insolvency?
