The End of Slide Projectors?
Recent advances in photographic technology are making slide projectors obsolete.
By Daniel Grant
Chicago art dealer Rhona Hoffman has a slide projector--it's probably 50 years old," she says--and she hasn't used it for "quite a while." The Barbara Krakow Gallery in Boston has a slide projector "somewhere, but I'm not sure where it is," according to gallery director Andrew Witkin. Still, for hopeful artists sending slides of their work to dealers, those responses are more promising than that of Roberta Brashears, the director of Nedra Matteucci Fine Art in Santa Fe, who states flatly, "No, we don't have a slide projector, but artists still send us slides."
And the future doesn't look very bright for slides. Kodak, the largest producer of slide projectors in the world, recently stopped production, concentrating on digital representations, leaving only a handful of smaller producers (Eiki in Japan, Simda in France, Leica in Switzerland, and Vivitar in California) to supply the dwindling market. "We used to sell thousands of slide projectors a year," says Howard Winch, the national sales manager for Elmo Manufacturing Corporation, in Plainview, New York, "and we still have some inventory. We may sell between 20 and 50 a month, but our production has ceased." Though they will no longer make projectors, Kodak will continue to produce color slide film, as well as provide service and parts for its projectors until 2011.

southwestNET: animation
Exhibition continues through August 21, 2005. southwestNET: animation focuses on the work of two outstanding-and very different-independent animators. Flat Black Films is an experimental animation workshop run by Bob Sabiston. He invented the revolutionary computer software Rotoshop-a digital version of rotoscoping (an early 20th-century animation technique of tracing over film footage). Known for his fresh style, Sabiston has animated shorts for MTV, PBS and filmmakers Lars von Trier and Jorgen Leth; he also worked on Richard Linklater's full-length film Waking Life, 2001. Sabiston's subjects range from the chance meeting in Central Park featured in Grasshopper, 2003, to the pure abstraction of Line Research, 2003, both in this exhibition. Stacey Steers's approach is quite the opposite. Painstakingly hand-drawn and grounded by tradition, her work is always intensely personal, playful yet contemplative. Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, 7374 East Second Street, Scottsdale, AZ 85251. http://www.smoca.org

The exhibition will feature over 80 paintings, sculptures and works on paper, all from public and private collections in the United States. The exhibition includes key European artists in exile in the United States, such as Salvador Dali and Yves Tanguy, in addition to Max Ernst, who lived in Arizona from 1946 to 1953. Also included are such well known Americans as Jackson Pollock, Arshile Gorky, Mark Rothko, Alexander Calder, Joseph Cornell, Isamu Noguchi and David Smith. The New York Times (March 31, 2005) has hailed the exhibition as "informative, high-spirited and humbling....a vigorously illuminating show." Phoenix Art Museum, 1625 N.
